Etymology[edit]

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Not given an etymology by GPC. The page for Proto-Indo-European *swenh₂- (to sound) derives the word from Proto-Celtic *swonnīti, from *swonh₂-éye-ti, the iterative form of the PIE root above. However, Proto-Celtic *sw- regularly becomes chw- in Welsh, bringing this derivation into serious doubt. Maybe it is from the root above, but via a Latin borrowing?”
