Etymology[edit]

From Ancient Greek ὑδροῦς (hudroûs), from the combining form of ὕδωρ (húdōr, water) + -οῦς (-oûs, -ous, -ful). Equivalent to hydro- +‎ -ous. Doublet of Otranto and Hydruntum.
