Etymology

Literally “in fate”. The homophony with in ann (“able”) in some accents has led some authors to believe the two are the same form, e.g. Sjoestedt-Jonval who gives táim i ndán as the orthography of [t̪ˠɑːi̯mʲ ə n̪ˠɑ̃ːn̪ˠ] “I can”.
