Etymology[edit]

From Ottoman Turkish امرنمك (imrenmek, to feel a longing), cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (amran-, to love, desire). Ultimately from Proto-Turkic *ăm- (gentle, quiet; to love, desire).[1] Also related to Old Turkic [script needed] (amrıl-, to be quiet), [script needed] (amul, gentle, quiet),[2]

  2. (intransitive) to desire (something unobtainable), envy
