Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Ottoman Turkish استغنا (istiġnā, “a being sufficiently rich to have no need of help, content, independence, real or affected, disdain, religious disdain of earthly things”),[1] or استغناء[2] from Arabic اِسْتِغْنَاء (istiḡnāʔ), verbal noun of اِسْتَغْنَى (istaḡnā, “to be rich, to become rich”).[3]
