Inherited from Malay jaksa, from Javanese ꦗꦏ꧀ꦱ (jaksa, prosecutor; auditor), from Old Javanese dyakṣa, dhyakṣa, adhyakṣa (inspector, superintendent, supervisor, guardian; highest judicial official), from Sanskrit अध्यक्ष (adhyakṣa, inspector, chairperson). Doublet of adiaksa. The sense of prosecutor is a semantic loan from Dutch officier van justitie and Japanese 檢事(けんじ) (kenji).
