Etymology

Possibly a reborrowing from a Semitic adstratum — which retained the voiced velar plosive /ɡ/ as in *gamal- and would eventually explain even the simultaneous presence of /i/ and /ɖɖ/ — ultimately from Vulgar Latin *camellus, from Latin camēlus (“camel”). Cognate with Italian cammello and Maltese ġemel. Doublet of gamiḍḍu.
