Etymology[edit]

A zero-grade, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱḗr (heart) with depalatalization due to Weise's law. Compare Greek καρδιά (kardiá), Welsh craidd, Armenian սիրտ (sirt), Lithuanian širdis, English heart.
