Etymology[edit]
Unknown. Possible, but unlikely, is a connection with the homonym kalpa (“piece of wood put on an animal's neck to prevent it from running through a fence, poke”), which is likely of Germanic origin.
Pronunciation[edit]
Noun[edit]
kalpa
- a triple-edged thrusting sword, similar to a rapier or smallsword
- (poetic) sword (in general)
- Synonym: miekka
- 1917, “Jääkärimarssi”, Heikki Nurmio (lyrics), Jean Sibelius (music):
- Syvä iskumme on, viha voittamaton,
meill’ armoa ei kotimaata.
Koko onnemme kalpamme kärjessä on,
ei rintamme heltyä saata.- Our blow is deep, our wrath invincible,
we have no mercy, no homeland
Our fortune lies at the tips of our swords,
our hearts shall not relent.
- Our blow is deep, our wrath invincible,
- (fencing) epee
