Etymology[edit]

From Philippine Spanish carindería, where the root itself is from Spanish carí which itself is from Tagalog kari (curry), according to Wenceslao Retana (1920). The Philippine Spanish term was coined by analogy with Tagalog karihan (place where curry is sold) and Spanish cafetería, according to Zorc (1981). By surface analysis, karindero +‎ -erya. Compare Spanish panadería.
