From Dutch catechumeen or Ecclesiastical Latin catēchūmenus, itself a borrowing from Ancient Greek κατηχούμενος (katēkhoúmenos, being instructed), present participle passive of κατηχέω (katēkhéō, sound through, instruct orally, catechise), from κατά (katá, down) + ἠχή (ēkhḗ, sound).
