Inherited from Malay kendali, from Javanese ꦏꦼꦤ꧀ꦝꦭꦶ (kendhali), from Old Javanese kuṇḍali, from Sanskrit कुण्डल (kuṇḍala, “ear-ring, rope, tie”).
