From residen + ke- -an, displaced karesidenan, from adapted borrowing of Javanese karésidhènan (ꦏꦫꦺꦱꦶꦝꦺꦤꦤ꧀, “residency”).

Usage notes[edit]
The term is used for Dutch East Indies administrative division in Java of Dutch residentie, which was translated into Japanese 州 (shū, syuu) during Japanese occupation.
