Middle Low German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Probably from klippe (clog, wooden shoe) +‎ schôle (school). See German Klippschule for more.

Noun[edit]

klipschôle f

  1. an unofficial school operated privately to teach (poor) children elementary skills
    • 1593, Nicolaus Gryse, Historia van der Lere, Levende und Dode M. Joachimi Slüters:
So hefft ein erbar radt en anmelden laten, dat se scholden einen godtsaligen düdeschen scholemeister holden, welckes ock also balde gescheen, vnd syn derwegen ock alle andere klipscholen afgeschafft worden.
Thus an honorable council notified them that they should employ a godly German schoolmaster, which was implemented quickly, and consequently all other unofficial schools were abolished as well.
