English[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Afrikaans kopdoek, from kop (head) + doek (cloth).

Noun[edit]

kopdoek (plural kopdoeke or kopdoeks)

  1. (South Africa) A headcloth.
    Synonym: doek
    • 1975, Willem Steenkamp, Land of the Thirst King:
The older women wear their dresses conservatively long and still cling to the brightly- coloured "kopdoek" (headcloth). Their daughters favour shorter skirts and their sons bell-bottoms, and the kopdoek seems to be fighting a losing battle.[1]
