Etymology[edit]

Since 1789 (O. Gutsmann's Deutsch-windisches Wörterbuch, in Bohorič orthographic form korusa), a haplological shortening from Serbo-Croatian kukùruz (cf. kúmara vs. kukùmar), further origin unknown.
