From Proto-Philippine *lagʔuk (swallow; gulp). Compare Pangasinan lagok, Kapampangan laguk, Bikol Central la-gok, Aklanon eag-ok, Cebuano lad-ok, Hiligaynon lab-ok, Waray-Waray dugal-ok, Malay deguk, and Minangkabau reguk.
