English[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From the larger size of the engine block assembly compared to a short block.
Noun[edit]
long block (plural long blocks)
- (automotive) An engine subassembly that consists of the assembled short block, plus the crankshaft, cylinder head, camshaft (usually), and valve train.
Usage notes[edit]
Not the same as big block, which refers to the physical size of an engine rather than the completeness of the subassembly.
