From Old Irish míl, from Proto-Celtic *mīlom (compare Breton mil, Welsh mil), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)meh₁l- (compare Dutch maal (“calf”), Ancient Greek μῆλον (mêlon, “sheep”)).
