Probably merged with the native word mạt derived form the earlier form mlạt (tasteless, insipid), whence also modern lạt, nhạt, attested in the compound hèn mlạt (> hèn mạt) in Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum (1651). For the sound change, compare mác (from earlier mlác).
