Likely borrowed from Tai Nüa ᥛᥫᥒᥰ (möeng, region, plain, country), possibly through Jingpho mung (country). Ultimately from Proto-Tai *mɯəŋᴬ (township). Compare Zaiwa ming (country, as in mingdan (country)).
