From Proto-Algonquian *ma·nθehsi (“flint, knife”). Cognate with Munsee máhlus (“flint”), Mi'kmaq mals, Malecite-Passamaquoddy malsapsq (“flint stone”), Massachusett môhshipsq (“flint stone”), Fox mâtethi (“knife”), Shawnee maanehθi (“knife”), Miami maalhsi (“knife”).
