From Middle High German manen, from Old High German manōn, from Proto-Germanic *manōną. Cognate with Old English manian.

mahnen (weak, third-person singular present mahnt, past tense mahnte, past participle gemahnt, auxiliary haben)

  1. to urge (someone) to do a specific, necessary task
  2. to beg fervidly
  3. to warn (someone) of (something) emphatically
  4. to remind pressingly, admonish

Usage notes[edit]

The preposition used with mahnen is an (this is the counterpart to e.g. of in the English equivalent to remind of). In older language instead of a prepositional phrase the genitive is common.
