Etymology[edit]

From ma’ +‎ tul, literally with the length [of].

Pronunciation[edit]

Preposition[edit]

matul

  1. (local) along
  2. (temporal) throughout, during

Usage notes[edit]

  • Both matul and waqt are used for “during”, but the former tends to mean that something happens for a considerable portion of the given time, whereas waqt only expresses that it coincides. Thus roughly:
matul il-festafor much of the festival
waqt il-festaat the time of the festival
