From earlier *metesimo, from Vulgar Latin *metipsimus, from a previous form *metipsissimus, derived from Latin -met (emphatic suffix) + ipse (himself) + -issimus (superlative suffix).[1] Cognate with French même, Spanish mismo, Portuguese mesmo.
