Etymology[edit]

Calque of Ecclesiastical Latin media hebdomas (middle of the week). Equivalent to mitti +‎ wehha. Presumably replaced earlier *wuotanestag (literally Wuotan's day), from Proto-West Germanic *Wōdanas dag.
