Etymology[edit]

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “The reconstruction Proto-Vietic *ɓəːlʔ (to wish; to desire) seems to be a mistake. The Rục form is bo:n³ ~ buǝn³, pointing to the Proto-Vietic form *ɓoːnʔ instead.”

Attested as Northern Middle Vietnamese muốn, muấn in the Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum (1651).
