Etymology 1[edit]

From Proto-Vietic *ɗeːp (glutinous (rice)). Cognate with Muong Bi đếp, Proto-Katuic *ɗeep (whence Pacoh deip (glutinous rice)), Khmer ដំណើប (dɑmnaəp, glutinous (rice)) (through a nasal infixed form).
