From Proto-Brythonic *nerθ, from Proto-Celtic *nertom, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ner-to- (virile, strong), a derivative of *h₂nḗr (man; vital energy). Cognate with Cornish nerth, Welsh nerth and Irish neart.
