Muong[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Chinese (MC nyuwk). In Mường Bi, as in many other Muong lects, this is the dominant form for the word "meat".

The upper register tone indicates that this word was borrowed when Chinese still had the pre-initial, likely at the same time as Pong kɲuk⁷ and earlier than Vietnamese nhục derived from Middle Chinese.
