From Proto-Vietic *-ɲəːp (dirty); cognate with Tho [Cuối Chăm] ɲəːp⁷ and Chut [Rục] ɲə́ːp.

Compare also Proto-Katuic *ɲəəp (bad), whence Pacoh nnhôp (bad, ugly) and Western Katu ɲəːp ("dirty, bad").
