Vietnamese[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Likely a non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 香 (SV: hương), although the palatal nasal initial is very hard or impossible to explain satisfactorily.
Although usually considered a non-Northern word, this word is attested in the Ngọc Vừng dialect of Vân Đồn district, Quảng Ninh province, a very minor coastal (insular) Northern dialect with many Northeastern features.[1]
