Inherited from Ottoman Turkish نیچون (niçin), from Old Anatolian Turkish نیچون (näyçün, niçün), a contraction of نه ایچون (nä içün). By surface analysis, ne (what) +‎ için (for). Cognate with Azerbaijani neyçün.
