- From earlier spelling otoritet, from Dutch autoriteit, from Middle Dutch auctoriteit, from Old French auctorité, from Latin auctoritas (“invention, advice, opinion, influence, command”), from auctor (“master, leader, author”).
- Current spelling is influenced by Latin auctoritas as *otor + -itas.
