From Danish papegøje, from Middle Low German papegoie, papagoie, from Old French papagai, or from Spanish papagayo, from Byzantine Greek παπαγᾶς (papagâs), from Arabic بَبَغَاء (babaḡāʔ), of onomatopoeic origin.
