Etymology[edit]

From Spanish piragua, in turn from Kari'na [Term?] (dugout). Doublet of pirogue.

periagua (plural periaguas)

  1. A dugout canoe.
    Synonyms: pirogue, dugout, logboat
  2. A vessel made by cutting a canoe in two lengthwise and inserting a large plank.
  3. A large keelless flat-bottomed boat for shoal-water navigation, decked at the ends only, propelled by rowing, or by sails on two masts capable of being struck.
  4. (by extension) Any small boat.
