Particularly: “Considered native Hmongic by Ratliff, though no reconstructed proto-form is given.[2] That said, given the decidedly cultural status of the word's semantics, a borrowing seems possible, though the phonetics are difficult to match with loan candidates. Maybe an ancient borrowing from Old Chinese (OC *hljɯmʔ, “to examine, judge”) or a related term?”
