Etymology[edit]
Cognate with Turkish kutan, Turkmen gotan (“pelican”) and Kazakh құтан (qūtan, “heron”). Compare also Mongolian хотон (xoton), Manchu ᡴᡡᡨᠠᠨ (kūtan) and Hungarian gödény (“pelican”), possibly a Turkic borrowing.
