From Proto-Tai *ʰrawᴮ (to bark). Compare Middle Chinese (MC xuwX|xuwH, “to roar; to shout”). Cognate with Thai เห่า (hào), Lao ເຫົ່າ (hao), Shan ႁဝ်ႇ (hào), Ahom 𑜑𑜧 (haw), Nong Zhuang haeuq.
