Tagalog[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Possibly a reduplication of Hokkien 歃 (sap, “to eat (of snacks, etc. in an undignified manner)”), according to Chan-Yap (1980).[1] Blust believes it to be from Proto-Austronesian *sabsab and unlikely from Hokkien, in view of the wider comparative picture he has collected.[2]
