From Old Norse skeppa, skjappa (a bushel, measure), from Old Saxon *skeppio, whence Middle Low German scheppe (a unit of weight). Ultimately from Proto-West Germanic *skappjō (compare Proto-West Germanic *skap (shape)), from Proto-Germanic *skapjô (vessel, tub, bushel), from *skapą (a creation, shape).
