Noun[edit]
shaded pole (plural shaded poles)
- A magnetic pole in an electric motor or solenoid with a shading coil that encircles a portion of the pole face. The shading coil creates an out-of-phase current that allows a single phase alternating current electric motor to start or minimizes chatter in an alternating current solenoid or relay.
