From Proto-Inuit *ciɣjuɣ (beak, muzzle), from Proto-Eskimo *c(ǝ)ɣruɣ (beak, nostrils, muzzle). Cognate with Inuinnaqtun higguk (beak), Alutiiq cugg’eq (beak, bill), and Inupiaq sigguuk (beak).
