From Chinese, possibly Hokkien 西瓜 (si-koa chí, watermelon seed) or 生瓜 (siⁿ-koa chí, watermelon seed) or Mandarin 西瓜子 (xīguāzǐ, watermelon seed) as per Manuel (1948).
