From Proto-Germanic *sunuz (son), from Proto-Indo-European *suHnús (son). Cognate with Old English sunu, Old Frisian sunu, Old Saxon sunu, Old High German sunu, Gothic 𐍃𐌿𐌽𐌿𐍃 (sunus).
