From the same stem as spalva (feather): Proto-Baltic *spelw-, *spl̥w- (> *spilw-), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)p(h)el-, *to split, cast off with an u extension. The variants spilva, spilve derive from *spilw- with different vowel endings.[1]
