English[edit]

Noun[edit]

spirotetronate (countable and uncountable, plural spirotetronates)

  1. Any of a family of antibiotic polycyclic compounds characterized by a tetronate unit joined by a single atom to a cyclohexene ring.
    • 1993, Gabor Lukacs, Recent progress in the chemical synthesis of antibiotics and related microbial products:
The cycloaddition reaction proceeded in excellent yield, but afforded a 25:65:10 mixture of three isomeric spirotetronates: 129, its diastereomer, and a regioisomer resulting from addition at the disubstituted 2,4-diene system.
    • 2012, Issues in Chemistry and General Chemical Research: 2011 Edition:
The researchers concluded: “The resulting spirotetronates, which bear an OSA-derived aryl group, exhibited antibacterial activities comparable to those of the parent products.”
