Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Possibly from Vulgar Latin *disperdicāre, from Latin disperdere,[1] or from Vulgar Latin *dispergicāre, iterative of Latin dispergere,[2] or alternatively from Vulgar Latin *exprecāre ("drive into ruin"), from Latin ex- + precāri, present active infinitive of precor.[3]
