Etymology[edit]

From Old Norse steypa, from Proto-Germanic *staupijaną (to pour, soak). Cognate with Faroese stoypa, Icelandic støypa, Swedish stöpa (to pour (a wax candle)) and Danish støbe (> Norwegian Bokmål støpe).
