Unknown. Perhaps a jocular pseudo-Sino-Vietnamese coinage, from a non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 兔帝 (rabbit emperor, SV: thố đế), from the notion of nhát như thỏ (as cowardly as a rabbit).
